SOS-репарация — репарация (см.; ремонт) поврежденной ДНК у E. coli, катализируемая ферментами, которые индуцируются сложным, но скоординированным механизмом. Вначале поврежденная ДНК каким-то образом активизирует recA-протеазу, разрывающую (расщепляющую) белок-репрессор lexA. Это вызывает (индуцирует) активизацию SOS-боксов в операторе (около 11 SOS-генов репарации) и системы рекомбинационной репарации, которые в норме репрессированы lexA-белком. SOS-р. — это клеточная реакция на сильные повреждения ДНК (напр., радиацией) и мутации нуклеотидов, которые ингибируют репликацию. Поскольку повреждения часто полностью разрушают матрицу, то SOS-р. может приводить к мутациям.
